FEMALE and male students carrying mattresses with messages condemning campus rape, have crashed the Sydney University open day, storming a lecture promoting the University to parents of prospective students.
The students — including a number of rape survivors — entered the Eastern Avenue lecture theatre, pushing past security before taking over the seminar.
Multiple rape survivors talked to the parents about their experiences, while students held ten mattresses spray-painted with slogans like “Welcome to the Hunting Grounds”, “Shame, USyd, Shame”, “End Victim Blaming” and “Protect students not reputation”.
When a university staff member turned off the lights, one parent yelled out “Don’t worry girls, keep going!”
student tearfully responded, saying, “Don’t panic about your precious university [reputation] for one second, and just listen to us — look at some of these statistics, that’s someone you know, have a bit of compassion and empathy because that’s someone you know.”
“We haven’t been listened to, don’t you know how awful that is?”
