TALLAHASSEE — Florida’s colleges and universities report among the lowest rates of on-campus rape in the nation, and relatively few of the state’s higher education institutions are under federal investigations for potentially mishandling sexual violence incidents, according to a POLITICO Florida analysis.
But national victims advocates and legal experts say the lack of reported rapes to the U.S. Department of Education, and the relative rarity of complaints under the landmark anti-discrimination Title IX law, do not necessarily mean sexual assault is less common in Florida’s campus communities.
Florida’s higher education institutions, which enroll 1.2 million students, reported 109 on-campus rapes in 2014. That amounts to 0.09 reported rapes per 10,000 students, which places the state 48th in the country, according to an analysis by POLITICO Florida of the most recent federal data available on college crime by state relative to enrollment. The vast majority of the state's schools reported zero rapes.
Only two states have lower rates — Arizona and Nevada. (Utah has the same rate as Florida.)
