The University of Guam board of regents yesterday unanimously approved a revised sexual misconduct policy that bans amorous relationships between employees and undergraduate students as well as other provisions meant to mitigate cases of sexual harassment.
The decision came a day after a roundtable discussion with legislators and Guam Community College officials focusing on sexual misconduct policies and guidelines for students, faculty and staff.
The presidents of UOG and GCC shared their proposed updated polices with the legislative committee with oversight over higher education and women's affairs during a roundtable discussion Wednesday at the Guam Legislature in Hagatna.
Underwood presented a 29-page draft of the revamped sexual misconduct policy to guide the university. Meanwhile, Mary Okada, GCC president, presented a page-and-a-half policy.
UOG is reeling from the January indictment of an associate professor alleged to have engaged in unwanted sexual contact with at least two students.
GCC, according to Okada, had just one report which involved employees in the last five years.
"We revised the UOG policy based on a nationwide review of (such) policies," Underwood said. He said that President Obama noted that one in five university students experienced some sort of sexual misconduct.
