College students in New York are now the subject of a very particular form of legislation about what qualifies as consent to sexual activity — affirmative consent. The concept of affirmative consent has been working its way across the U.S., from college campuses to California's high schools. But are there erotic ways to practice affirmative consent during sex? The answer is: hell yes.
To understand why, let's first look at the precise wording of the new legislation so we know what affirmative consent is:
“Affirmative consent is a knowing, voluntary and mutual decision among all participants to engage in sexual activity. Consent to any sexual act or prior consensual sexual activity between or with any party does not necessarily constitute consent to any other sexual act.”
If you're still unclear, there's also an affirmative consent "standard," which is that it is "the responsibility of the person who initiates sexual contact to make sure they have the verbal consent of the other person". Basically, affirmative consent now means an enthusiastic "yes," not just the absence of "no," as the basic standard for sex to be consensual.
The need to say yes all the time — openly, verbally — to sexual acts may sound like an unnecessary and aggravating way to make sure everybody's on board, but it can actually be awesome. Consent is sexy anyway, but the act of actively, verbally gaining and giving consent can give genuine erotic charge to your sex life. Here are seven sexy ways to practice affirmative consent during sex.
