ACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California lawmakers passed hundreds of bills through their house of origin this week ahead of a deadline. Here's a look at some of the proposals working their way through the Legislature:
HEALTH
— SB4 by Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens, would make California the first in the nation to extend health coverage to immigrants who are in the country illegally and seeks a federal waiver for California to sell unsubsidized private health insurance through the state's health exchange.
— SB128 by Sens. Bill Monning, D-Carmel, and Lois Wolk, D-Davis, would shield doctors from prosecution if they give terminally ill adults the option of medical aid in dying.
EDUCATION
— SB499 by Sen. Carol Liu, D-La Canada Flintridge, requiring school districts to adopt new teacher evaluation systems that include multiple measures plus classroom reviews.
— AB329 by Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, D-San Diego, to expand California's sex education curriculum, requiring schools to teach more about sexually transmitted infections and discuss same-sex relationships as part of HIV prevention.
— SB695 by de Leon and Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, D-Santa Barbara, to bring sexual assault training to California high schools following last year's "Yes means Yes" affirmative consent standard for colleges.
