It's a different approach to solving what some consider an epidemic; sexual assaults on college campuses. The approach is to get couples to sign an agreement that they will have sex only when it's consensual. The contracts suggests that you take a picture with your partner and the contract, fill out the form, and agree to always use protection. The University of Minnesota is adopting the "Yes Means Yes" model.
Just about a year ago, a sexual assault task force was adopted after two rapes at Minnesota State University-Moorehead. Ashley Atteberry is one of the co-chairs of the President's MSUM task force on sexual assault. Though the task force has not specifically dicussed the "Yes Means Yes" affirmative consent rule, she says the model has some possibilities.
"I think it can be healthy to really be promoting that culture of acceptance if students are you know, open about consent is cool, right? Consent is sexy or consent is something we believe in and really want to promote," Atteberry says.
A couple of students on campus had a mixed response about the "Yes Means Yes" rule.
Zain Abdul, student at MSUM says, "I could just take a photo just to support the fact that sexual consent is cool."
