Original Petition:
This is gender discrimination.
Instead of addressing rape and sexual assault at UVa, this mandate perpetuates the idea that women are inferior, sexual objects. It is degrading to Greek women, as it appears that the NPC views us as defenseless and UVa's new fraternal policies as invalid. Allowing the NPC to prevent us from celebrating (what used to be) a tight-knit community, sends the message that we are weak.

1.27.15 Update:
Jan 27, 2015 — Hi All -
After meeting with Dean Groves this morning, it is clear we need to direct our attention towards the NPC and not the UVa administration. UVa has not been in contact with the NPC, and they are unwilling to get involved in the issue for legal reasons.
Please email the NPC generally at [email protected], the Executive Director Nicki Meneley at [email protected] or the Panhellenic Support Coordinator Caitlin Moulton at [email protected] with your concerns about this mandate. Please appeal from a place of reason, and not a place of emotion. Also remember to put the petition link in your email. Several important points worth stating:
- We are women outside of our sororities.
- We agree safety measures need to be in place, but this is not the solution.
- Please inform them of the current UVa rules. They are under the impression that we wear letters and move from house to house in a group. This is not the case.
Also, if you are attending any meeting on grounds this week regarding the mandate (such as the StudCo meeting tonight at 6 pm in Garrett Hall open to all), please bring a copy of this petition with you. Many voices make a difference! I also recommend printing off the comments because they are all inspiring.
